PLEDGE OF RESISTANCE
NUCLEAR POWER IS NO SOLUTION
The shortsighted Finnish energy policy should enrage us for hundreds of millennia. Force feeding nuclear power, as a solution to save us from the impact of climate change is a radiating lie.
Sane development is founded in conserving energy and promoting renewables. It is time to leave fossil fuels and nuclear power behind us. The threat of climate chaos calls for action now.
From beginning to end the nuclear power is deadly. The extraction and enrichment of uranium fuel leaves in its wake 1000-2000 kilos of radioactive and toxic waste for every kilo of fuel produced. There is no solution to the nuclear waste problem. The highly radioactive waste produced in nuclear power plants remains deadly hazardous for at least 100 000 years. The Finnish ‘’solution’’ of storing nuclear waste in the bedrock of Olkiluoto is a risk filled project.
Nuclear power is unsafe. A nuclear catastrophe is possible and increasingly probable. There have been a number of close calls at various nuclear facilities in the recent years. Olkiluoto 3 is notorious for its safety violations. Alongside pressure to build new reactors, old reactors are kept running much longer then originally intended, increasing the risk of catastrophic accidents.
Nuclear power is hazardous to the health of those living near the power stations. The Baltic is already to most radioactive sea in the world. In Central Europe the incidence of leukaemia among children living near nuclear plants is higher than the average.
Nuclear power is not cheap. Olkiluoto 3 construction costs already double the original estimate. Additional costs will be borne by consumers of electricity as well as the French taxpayer, the owner of Areva, the company responsible for the construction.
Nuclear power is not needed. The need for new nuclear plants is justified by bloated estimates of increases in industrial output. Combating climate change calls for energy efficiency everywhere, including industry. Energy conservation and renewables suffice; the only logic for new nuclear projects in Finland would be export of nuclear electricity under the principle, power to you, and waste to us.
Nuclear power and nuclear weapons go hand in hand. It is precisely the same production chain from the uranium mine to the enrichment facility supplying both the fuel for the nuclear plants and the weapon grade material. The nuclear resurrection in Finland supports nuclear weapons proliferation.
NUCLEAR POWER WON’T SAVE US FROM CLIMATE CHANGE
Even significant increases in nuclear power production will only marginally lessen greenhouse gas emissions. Doubling the current nuclear output would cut emissions at most by 5 percent. This would mean tens of new reactors every year. The nuclear fuel cycle, as well as the construction of new nuclear power plants, is fossil fuel intensive.
Resources invested in nuclear power are away from renewables. Building nuclear plants is slow and slows the move away from fossils fuels (by neglecting investment in renewables). Finland is already lagging far behind its emission target under the Kyoto protocol. The renewables package decided on in conjuncture with the decision on the fifth reactor, now under construction at Olkiluoto, hasn’t been realised.
The only beneficiary of nuclear power and centralised energy production is the industry. Building new nuclear power now would mean sending a message to the industry, that it is not required to get with the program in the fight against climate change.
For these reasons, I do not accept the building of new nuclear power. I am afraid nuclear power will cause catastrophes, which will put in danger my life or that of the generations to come. I demand that the parliament decides that no new permits to build nuclear reactors in Finland be granted.
Should the parliament grant permit to build any new nuclear reactors I will:
a) Immediately begin a struggle against the nuclear industry by any means possible, including non-violent direct action. I am ready to break the law if it is necessary to achieve a greater goal, namely the protection of life.
b) Support all that struggle against the nuclear industry including those engaging in non-violent direct action. I accept the breaking of law if it is necessary to achieve a greater goal, namely the protection of life.
I accept all possible non-violent means to fight the nuclear industry as long as they do not hurt or cause danger to living beings.
